Many of us have struggled with our mental health at some point, or we know someone who has. When we suspect that a loved one could be having mental health problems, it can raise concerns. If your loved one shows any of these signs, contact a helplines in Australia for advice – 21 helplines are available:

  • They are easily startled.
  • They seem secretive, like they're hiding something.
  • They are struggling at school or work.
  • They reject invitations to spend time together or hang out.
  • They have told you they are struggling emotionally.
  • They always seems to be down or in a low mood.
  • They have started posting worrying content on social media.
  • They have become more withdrawn.

When someone you love opens up to you about difficult thoughts and feelings, not knowing how to respond is very normal. Yet it can make you feel helpless and cause you distress. Fortunately, there are lots of simple ways you can show your support.
