Substance abuse and drugs and alcohol addiction helplines are available in Scotland

Recovery from substance abuse and addiction is possible. It all starts with taking the first step to admit you have a problem with drugs or alcohol and seeking help. You can get support for yourself or a loved on by contacting one of 3 hotlines in Scotland if you notice these symptoms:

  • Experiencing unpleasant side-effects (otherwise known as withdrawal symptoms) after stopping drugs, alcohol or other substances.
  • Using more of drugs or alcohol than was originally intended.
  • Spending a lot of time recovering from drugs, alcohol, or other substances.
  • Stealing money or selling items to afford to buy drugs or alcohol
  • Lowered self-esteem and self-worth.
  • Engaging in unsafe behavior as a result of substance use, e.g. having unprotected sex and sharing needles.
  • Having a short temper and being more irritable and aggressive than usual.
  • Needing more drugs or alcohol to feel the same effects (otherwise known as tolerance).

You may feel that your problem with drugs or alcohol has gone too far and that there is no hope for the future. However, substance abuse and addiction are treatable. With the right support, you can recover.

Crisis counselors are available to support you whether you are the one struggling, or whether you're concerned about a friend or family member. You can get free, confidential, zero-judgement support for substance use and addiction from a hotline in Scotland.
